Yarmouth Lifeboat & Crew
Up until the year 1860 any sailor unfortunate enough to be wrecked on the Isle of wight stood little chance of being rescued except by the courage and bravery of fishermen and coastguards, the first lifeboats stationed on the island were at brooke and brighstone in 1860, Ryde [1869] Totland bay [1885] and Atherfield [1890], with the introduction of steam lifeboats which were able to cover a larger area Atherfield and Brighstone stations were declared redundant and closed in 1915 Brooke then closed in 1937 with 590 lives saved between the three stations , the steam lifeboats were not a great success and Totland bay was rather exsposed for the lifeboat to lie afloat so in 1924 the station in Yarmouth was opened with a new lifeboat a 46ft watson named B.A.S.P
